About Citywinds...

Citywinds, a new music wind quintet, is a regular feature on numerous concert series in and beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. As a recipient of a 1997 Chamber Music America Commissioning Grant for a new work by composer Chen Yi, Citywinds continues its 8-year tradition of commissioning new quintets by both emerging and established composers. A 1999 Southern California tour included a residency at UC Riverside and a performance at the Spruce Street Forum in San Diego. The ensemble performed a residency at the 1997 Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, and for its second consecutive year the group participated in "Composers in the Schools", a program designed by the American Composers Forum to bring together professional composers and ensembles with student composers from San Francisco area high schools. The quintet is on both the California Arts Council's Touring Roster, and the Young Audiences of the Bay Area Artist Roster.

Citywinds was founded in 1991 by graduates of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and was selected the following year by the San Francisco Symphony to perform educational concerts in the city's more than 100 schools, through the Adventures in Music Program. The quintet's performances have been featured on KQED's West Coast Weekend, KPFA's morning music program, and on The Discovery Channel.
