This is our brand new Toyata Prius. It is a hybrid vehicle that uses gasoline to run a super efficient combustion engine and batteries to run a powerful electric motor. It is supposed to get between 45 and 52 miles per gallon and is a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV), 90% cleaner than a conventional automobile. We wanted an electric car but it was unrealistic with our extreme driving needs (2 cars both for long distances in the same day), so we opted for a hybrid. It seats 5 adults (4 comfortably) has a large trunk, 6 CD changer, cruise control, air conditioning, front and side airbags, power everything, and keyless entry. It uses the gasoline engine and electric motor individually and in tandom. It does not need to be plugged into the wall to charge. It charges with the gasoline engine, and coasting and braking (with kinetic energy from the wheels). It cost us about $21,000, and Toyota claims that it cost them $35,000 to manufacture. They are subsidizing their Prius sales with SUV sales. The car has a range of over 500 miles on one 11.9 gallon tank of gas.
